CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

ONWARD TO DUSKHAVEN

The next landmark they came to was the Ebonwood Pines, known for its black pines that stood higher than any tree Sylas had seen yet. It was a majestic forest, one that Sylas enjoyed walking through.

“This is the best part of traveling to Duskhaven on foot,” Mira said once she had seen Sylas look up at the trees with appreciation for what must have been the fiftieth time. “And it is pretty much all we will see until we reach the city. So get used to it.”

Sylas took a deep breath in through his nostrils. “It’s so fresh,” he said as a piney scent reached him.

“It’s a great place to gather supplies.”

“I’ll bet. Are there demons this far out?”

Mira glanced at the forest. She knew from some of the things her uncle told her that there was no telling where the demons were at any given time. It wasn’t something that was entirely predictable unless someone had classed as a demon hunter.

“I’m going to take your silence to mean that they could be anywhere.”

“Then you’re better at reading silence than I thought you would be.”

Sylas laughed and strolled ahead, his mace resting against his shoulder as if it were an axe. It had been a good morning thus far, and the breakfast at the Welcome Inn had turned out to be better than he thought. He was full, and ready for a long day of walking and getting to know Mira.

The temperature in the Underworld was perfect, at least in the woods. Not too hot, with a slight breeze, but not cold enough for Sylas to feel like he could benefit from a jacket.

The walk continued after they rested for a bit, Mira sharing some food she had made the previous day. Later that evening, they came out of the forest to find the city of Duskhaven.

[Quest Contract Complete - You now owe Mira Ravenbane a favor.]

“I give you Duskhaven,” Mira said, oblivious to the prompt he had just received.

“Quest contract completed, I now owe you a favor.” Sylas smirked. “Sorry, just got the notification.”

“Did you?” She playfully brought her hand to her chin. “I’ll have to remember that.”

Sylas checked his status and saw that it didn’t mention anything about a favor. “Am I just supposed to remember that I owe you a favor.”

“I won’t let you forget,” Mira said.

“In that case, is there a way to modify a contract?”

“Of course, there is. Why?”

“I already told you, we no longer need a sigilist because Iron Rose told me what the upstairs portal did. Now, I need to see a sigilist after visiting with the Ale Alliance, meaning our reasoning for coming here to Duskhaven is different than it was when we made the contract.”

“Next time,” Mira said, “simply change the contract. Now, you owe me a favor.”

“You should have asked me to change the contract, then.”

“It must have slipped my mind.”

Sylas looked out at a city humming with life.

Nestled in the wide bowl of a shadowed valley,
